Meet the Teachers!
Welcome to second grade! My name is Jil Birkner. I am a graduate from Wayne State University with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education. I received my Master’s of Education Degree in Special Education. This will be my tenth year of teaching for National Heritage Academies. I am married to a wonderful man named Peter and we have three children: Amanda, son-in-law John, Peter and Joseph. We moved to North Carolina from Michigan just over a year ago. My husband and I just purchased a new home. I love being around nature and in my spare time I enjoy hiking and bird watching. We love it here in North Carolina! Wake Forest Charter Academy is a student-centered community and it is my commitment as a teacher to develop, inspire, and motivate our students to excel. It's going to be an amazing year!

My name is Kelly Simmons and I can’t wait to begin this school year teaching Second Grade! I am from the small town of Wendell, North Carolina. I received my Bachelors of Science degree in Elementary Education K-6. Shortly after graduating I married the love of my life David Simmons. I began my career at Franklinton Elementary School. I spent a total of nine years in the Franklin County School System, where I had the opportunity to teach first, second, and fourth grade. I have three daughters who are my world! We love to do things as a family such as attending church and just about any outdoor activities. I hold my girls to a very high moral and academic standard. As a mom, I encourage my children to excel academically, but more importantly to become a person of good moral character. As a teacher, I feel the same way about my students. My motto in class is to teach and treat your children as if they were my own. I look forward to having a great year with them.
